Easy Ways to Build Quality Backlinks & Boost Rankings
Having quality backlinks to your site is of the utmost importance for building your rankings on Google’s search results pages. There are many relatively easy ways to build high quality backlinks. Unfortunately, there are also ways of buying large quantities of low-quality links that won’t do an ounce of good for your rankings (in fact, you’ll be penalized). So don’t bite the bait.
The best approach is to take many different tactics and keep gaining quality links one-by-one. This isn’t something that you do overnight. Building links becomes one of your over-arching strategies that guides how you operate online. When it comes to linking, slow and steady really does win the race.
With that in mind, here are a few ideas about how you can gain quality backlinks with relative ease. You’ll soon see the difference in rankings and traffic.
Approach popular sites in your industry with a suggestion for a guest post. A guest post on another site can have a by-line with a link to your site. Remember, you want links from authoritative domains, so try to contact the bigger fish in your industry.
Many sites accept submissions for guest posts. In order to check which platforms do, you can search things like: “write for us,” “guest posts,” “become a contributor,” etc, along with your industry keywords. So you might search something like: real estate market + “guest post.”
Broken Link Building
Large sites have hundreds, maybe thousands of links to external sites and sometimes they get broken. Webmasters have trouble keeping up with external links and often appreciate when users notify them that a link no longer works.
If you are the user who notifies the webmaster of a broken link, then you can also suggest a new link to replace it. This can obviously be a link to your site. The more helpful you can be, the more likely a webmaster will be to give you the link. Webmasters often appreciate the help, and may grant you the link if they see it as relevant for their users.
There is a Chrome plug in called Check my links that you can use to check for broken links on large sites.
Create useful visual content
Images, media, and infographics can be a great way to get links to your site. Simply create timely, useful and visually stimulating media and then submit it to a site where people can find it and embed it on their site. Here’s a list of 20 sites where you can submit graphics.
Check out competitor links
Be sure to monitor your competitors to see how they are gaining backlinks by following their publishing. You can create a Google alert every time they publish something. You can also use a tool like Monitor Backlinks, or Backlink Tool to check for links that they have that you don’t have.
Get the word out about your business
There are two ways to generate articles that link to your business. First you can write a press release and send it out via a service like PRNewswire. Your content will get distributed and that could land you backlinks on premium news sites. There is some cost to using these services, though.
But if you want to do this for low cost, then simply find the email addresses of editors and journalists involved in the news sites, blogs, and other important platforms in your industry and build your own list. Each time you have some news, write a press release and send it out to your list.
This can also be a great opportunity to make contact with editors and writers in order to pitch stories, suggest interviews, or tell them why their readers would want to hear your story. All of these types of content can be potential places for new links to your site.
Keep track of your backlinks & mentions
Be sure to take a baseline reading of your backlinks so you can monitor your progress. We use SEMRush and Moz to monitor backlinks, but there are so many out there. While you’re at it, check mentions of your site as well, using a Google Alert, to make sure that when people mention you they actually link to you.
Spending 5 to 10 minutes each day building links will give you excellent results in the long run.
